JULY 2007 OFFER SHEET

August’s specimens of hematite are different–true heavy metal! We have enough extra pieces so that if you would like a bigger piece than usual, just call or Email us.

Also, we bought an extra large lot of the Rainbow pyrite we’re featuring this month, so if any of you gemstone cutters would like some, let us know!

And we finally received our shipment from Spain, with the nearly-perfectly-symmetrical cubes of pyrite, the sphalerite, and the amethyst. For PYRITE, we have Deluxe-size cubes about .75" in matrix about 2" by 2" for $22.50; or for the same price you could specify 2" by 2" matrix with a couple (or more) of smaller cubes. We have large matrix pieces with much larger cubes from $60 to $550, and multiple intergrown and twinned cubes, on and off matrix, from $100 to $950. We are going to try to photograph and videotape each one of the 50 we picked out at the warehouse there and make them available by next month.

AMETHYST CRYSTALS. We met with the owner of one of the two Bolivian ametrine mines at his office in Barcelona, and obtained from him some wonderful single amethyst crystals from the mine. They are clear quartz at the bottom, and have zones of lovely light purple in the top half or so, excellent faces and terminations, and all have minor dings from the mining process. About 2" high and 1.75" wide for $16, and bigger for $20, $24, and $40.

AMETHYST/SMOKY QUARTZ CRYSTALS, these are a very unusual combination, also from the ametrine mine in Bolivia, these are clear quartz at the bottom, with zones of light and dark violet and zones of smoky quartz interspersed together–amazing! Excellent faces, terminations, again with slight dings from mining. 2" high and 1.5" wide for $16, taller for $24 and $28, and the biggest, 3" high and 3" wide for $45 and $60.

GEMMY SPHALERITE, Spain. The mine that this marvelous material comes from is closed, flooded, and on public land–a triple whammy that means it will probably never be collected again. We picked up about a kilo of cutting rough for 25¢ gram, and some polished slabs that are gorgeous and expensive–call or Email for details.

RHODIZITE, Tsilaizina, Antananarivo Province, Madagascar. Light yellow/light green .5" crystals in matrix with other rare minerals. 1" x 1" matrix to 2" x 2" for $20 and $30.

WOLFRAMITE, Yaogangxian Mine, Yizhang County, Chenzhou Prefecture, Hunan Prov, China. Groups of shiny metallic-black bladed crystals, no matrix, about 2" by 2" for $18, $24, $36.

OCEAN JASPER, Madagascar, colorful polished oval-shaped slabs, 2" x 3" for $16.

METEORITES, Sikhote-Alin, Russia, our April 2004 featured mineral (Kamacite). We received another batch with smaller pieces, similar to what we sent to Deluxe Club members back in 2004, about 1.5" across and .5" to 1" wide, for $22.50. The supply of these meteorites with excellent form is starting to dwindle, which means prices will be going up in the near future. These are from the meteorite that fell to Earth at 10:30 AM, February, 1947–perhaps some remember hearing about it when it happened? We still have a few larger pieces about 3" by 1" for $48. Since we featured these, we have a fascinating write-up to go with them.

METEORITES, Gran Chaco Gualamba, near Campo del Cielo, Argentina. Excellent quality specimens from a new find close to the site at Campo del Cielo, with good fingerprinting from about 3.5" by 2" to 4" by 2.5" for $90 to $150, and one larger for $360. Email us if you’d like photos of these attractive visitors from outer space!

MOLDAVITE, Czech Republic, our December 2001 stone, the natural glass believed to have been formed by the impact of the meteorite that created the Ries Crater in southern Germany. A new batch of gemmy green pieces about quarter to half dollar size for $40 to $60 by weight. You’re sure to find the write-up that comes with it quite fascinating!

We have had such interest in these rare minerals that we brought in another small lot from the gem pegmatites of Myanmar, which continue to produce wonderful, small crystals of rare minerals, such as April's phenakite. We have the tourmaline group mineral Uvite [CaMg3Al6(BO3)3[Si6018][(OH)30]--small crystals about ½" long and ⅛" to ¼" wide, with rich green color, nice crystals form, and good terminations, for $20, $24, and $28; small crystals of Baddeleyite [Zr02] of an intense dark green color, beautiful sharp crystals about ½" long and ⅛" to ¼" wide for $24; and Enstatite [Mg2Si2O6] as beautiful green crystals about ¾" to 1" high and ⅜" to ½" wide, again with nice crystals forms and terminations, for $24, with longer ones for $30, $40, and $50.Take 10% off if you order one of each--you'll really come to love these beauties if you view them with your 10x loupe! Don't have one yet? We have an excellent 10x loupe available for $19.95. (We received notice from the loupe importer of a large price increase from the optics factory in Belarus where these excellent loupes are made, so if you wait too long to get one, they may be 30% higher in price, or more.)

We still have a few left of these rare minerals, and we hope you’ll think these are very good deals. And to make everything more affordable, we want to offer an additional 5% discount if you purchase five minerals or more, and 10% for ten or more. Let’s start with 12 rare minerals from the former Soviet Union:

BOBIERRITE, Zheleznyi Mine (Iron Mine), Kovdor Massif, Kola Peninsula, Murmanskaja Oblast', Russia. Pearly white monoclinic crystals in dolomite matrix about 1.25" by 1.25" for $26, slightly larger for $30.

LAMPROPHYLLITE, Malyi Punkaruaiv Mt., Lovozero Massif, Kola Peninsula, Murmanskaja Oblast', Russia. Sprays of brown needle-like crystals in matrix about 1" by 1" for $16, or 2" by 2" for $22. The matrix on some has slight orange fluorescence under longwave UV light.

GROSSULAR GARNET, Sierra de la Cruz, Coahuila, Mexico, our December 2002 featured mineral. These are the raspberry-colored garnets in a highly breakable white matrix. The garnets, some as big as ½” across, are not formed completely, revealing a black inner core, reflecting a change in the garnet’s composition as it grew. 2" by 3" matrix pieces are available for $22.50 with smaller matrix for $16.

ALMANDINE GARNETS from the new find at Xinjiang Autonomous Region, China, that we were hoping to feature this year, but that didn’t work out. ENHYDRO AGATE, Fontuero Xavier, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, polished pieces of beautifully banded agate with water trapped inside! This is the same mineral fluid from which the agate crystallized. PYRITE EGGS & SPHERES, Peru. These have been available for a couple of years now, and what makes these so cool is that the surface is never solid–these have lots of natural openings where the pyrite crystals are visible, and with the bright brassy metallic luster, these are very popular at shows. Eggs about 2" high and 1.5" wide for $30 and $36, 3" high for $70; 2" diameter spheres for $60 and $70.

HUBEITE & INESITE, Fengjiashan Mine (Daye Copper Mine), Daye, Huangshi area, Hubei, Central South Region, China. We featured this combo in August 2001, before hubeite had even been published as a new mineral! The write-up contained the documents submitted to the IMA with the original specimens, so you’ll receive them too if you order one of these. We have a few matrix pieces left with very small needles of root beer brown hubeite crystals and brownish pink inesite, about .75" by .75" for $16, 1" by 1" for $22.50, and 2" by 3" for $30 & $40. Not terribly attractive, but pretty cool for a new mineral.
