June 2002

We are expecting a lot of small native iron pieces from the famous locality on Disko Island, Greenland. Since most native iron found is in the form of meteorites, these pieces are often called Terrestrial iron in order to differentiate them. These are about 15mm in size, and have oxidized to the rusty red-brown color we might expect to see, but if we were to polish off the oxidation, we would see the silver-white native metal underneath. The cubes are $3.50 each or 2 for $6

We also have specular hematite, as you read about in the write-up, from northern Michigan. We have slabs up to 4" by 4" for $12. In lieu of polishing, these have been coated with acrylic to show of their beauty. We also have a couple of large, thick slabs, about one foot across and over an inch think for $80. These show the shiny grey-black color specular hematite is known for. This material has been selling like hot cakes for us at our wholesale show in Tucson the last couple of years!

And we didn’t get a chance to offer these in April like we wanted to, but we do have lovely eudialyte in a couple of other forms you might enjoy. We have cabochons as follows:

Freeform 12mm x 8mm $13.50     Rectangle 12mm x 8mm with high dome $13.50      Trillion 10mm x 10mm with high dome $45             Rectangle 18mm x 11mm with high dome $30     Large rounded triangle 65mm x 27mm $54     Large rounded triangle hand-held piece 44mm x 30mm $60

We also received 4 thin eudialyte slabs up to 2½" by 2" with an acrylic coating so they shine. Each has some of the white feldspar and other associated minerals for a beautiful contrast. They are priced by size, $22 for the smallest, $30 for the next larger, $35 for the next, and $40 for the largest. Check out our web page for scans!

GEMMY CELESTITE FROM TURKMENISTAN We’re delighted to say we received another lot of the wonderful gemmy pale blue celestite crystals on massive orange celestite from Turkmenistan. These are quite beautiful! We have pieces up to about 3" by 3" with lots of lovely light blue crystals for $36 and larger pieces up to 4" by 3" for $60. These are quite exceptional!

NEW LOT OF STIBNITE FROM HUNAN PROVINCE CHINA Our February 1998 featured Mineral of the Month in excellent, high quality pieces. We have small sprays and shafts of highly lustrous metallic gray crystals up to 2½" long for $12, please specify spray of thin crystals or one long crystal, plus a couple of V-shaped growths 3½" long for $36. Outstanding!

"TANGERINE" QUARTZ FROM BRAZIL These are neat crystals with a light tangerine color caused by a fine layer of hematite needles in the crystal, from Minas Gerais, Brazil. We have individual crystals up to 2½ long by 1" wide for $5 and a few 4" by 2" clusters of small crystals for $16. We hadn’t seen these before– they’re really neat.

AMMONITE FOSSILS REPLACED BY PYRITE FROM MICHAILOV, RUSSIA We just received a new batch of these beauties– the inside has been cut and polished to show off the shiny pyrite and some of the details of the shell. These pieces are up to 1" high and ¾" wide. Typical pieces are $12 each and show a good amount of detail– the best of the lot are $18. These also look wonderful as pendants, and Cheryl can set one in one of her fabulous wire designs for $35 more.

RARE & UNUSUAL– LIBYAN DESERT GLASS And for those who interest in tektites was stimulated by December’s moldavite specimens, we picked up a small lot of Libyan Desert Glass from the Great Sand Sea of southern Libya, Egypt, and northern Sudan. These rare tektites are glassy yellow in color, and the characteristic tektite pitting has all been worn away by millions of years of natural "polishing" by sand. We have fascinating pieces about 1" by ½" for $14, to 1" by ¾" for $16 to 1" by 1" for $22.

LARGE APATITE CRYSTALS From the Yates Mine, Otter Lake, Quebec, Canada, we brought home some nice, large single crystals of apatite. They are an opaque dark green in color with a vitreous (glassy) luster– very nice! Small crystals up to 2½" long and 1½" wide are available for $12, and larger crystals up to about 4" long and 2" wide are $24. Very nice!

COPROLITE (FOSSILIZED ANIMAL DROPPINGS) FROM MADAGASCAR This is a new find, as far as we know, from the Tulear region of southwestern Madagascar. We could not find out what kind animal left its droppings to be immortalized as fossils, but they look like the siderite replacements we have seen offered from Washington state and are reddish brown in color. Coprolite is the scientific name for fossilized feces. Size: about 2"-3" by 1"-2", $6 each

LAVA FROM la PLAINE DES SABLES, LA REUNION ISLAND These brown-colored pieces resemble the coprolite, but are much lighter in weight, evidence of gas pockets trapped inside! A lava flow in 1986 enlarged this volcanic island east of Madagascar. We have a few nice pieces about 2½" by 1½" for $5.
