March

As you know from your monthly specimens we send you as part of our Club, we always feature especially nice pieces, and usually at bargain prices! Of course, when you order a mineral we’ve previously featured in our Club, we’ll always send the write-up with your next monthly write-up so you can learn all about it. And if you don’t have internet access, call us and we can send you photos!

ULTRAVIOLET (UV) LAMPS! If you’ve become intrigued by the phenomenon of fluorescence, you might like to have your own ultraviolet (UV) light to check out your specimens with! The three small mini 4-Watt battery operated lamps in the center of the scan are small enough to fit in a pocket (6½" long by 1½" wide) and run on 4 AA batteries (not included.) Club member’s prices for the three units (including free shipping in the U.S.):

Short wave (254nm) $41

Long wave (365nm) $25

Combination short and long wave (254/365nm) $69

Call for details if interested in other lamps, as seen in the scan to the right. We use a Handheld 6-Watt Lamp here at home.

FINE CANADIAN SPECIMENS At the end of Tucson, we picked up a very nice lot of specimens from Canada, including vesuvianite, green grossular garnet, demantoid garnet, diopside, albite, pectolite, and others. We have only a couple of each mineral, and most are small in size (1" by 2" and smaller), so if you’re interested please call or Email and we’ll give you dimensions and prices.

GEMMY CELESTITE FROM TURKMENIA As part of the lot, we also received some wonderful gemmy pale blue celestite crystals on massive orange celestite from Turkmenia. These are quite beautiful and we only have a couple– call for details

CARVED FLUORITE FROM CHINA-BEAUTIFUL!

As some of you know, we have been offering carved items from China for the last few years, made of the beautiful banded fluorite mentioned in the write-up. This fluorite has green, purple, and clear zones and is highly translucent and just beautiful! New this year were fluorite candle holders, which are about 3½" wide in diameter and about 2½" high, with a felt pad on the bottom, and we’ll include a votive candle with each one for $29. (Small candles are recommended, as fluorite is somewhat heat-sensitive.)

Fluorite cup about 2½" high for $19

Fluorite bowl about 4" across for $26

Fluorite massage point about 2½" long and 1" wide with a pointed end and a rounded end $10

Longer fluorite massage points, same as above, but about 4" long and over 1" wide $18

AMMONITE FOSSILS REPLACED BY    PYRITE FROM MICHAILOV, RUSSIA

We just received a new batch of these beauties– the scan shows both sides of typical pieces. The inside has been cut and polished to show off the shiny pyrite and some of the details of the shell. These pieces are up to 1" high and ¾" wide. Typical pieces are $12 each and show a good amount of detail– the best of the lot are $18. These also look wonderful as pendants, and Cheryl can set one in one of her fabulous wire designs for $35 more.

MALACHITE FROM SHABA DISTRICT, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO We received an extra quantity of Junior size malachite pieces as part of our February lot. These would make wonderful gifts for friends and relatives who appreciate nature, as these have the gorgeous green color malachite is famous for, along with the silky sheen our unusual pieces had that month. Some could even be used for wire jewelry! Available at $7 each, about 1" by 2" to 2' by 2" in size (Please specify if for use in jewelry so we’ll pick an appropriate one

MALACHITE AND AZURITE FROM THE MORENCI MINE, ARIZONA In 1999, a new lot of brilliantly colored malachite and azurite came out of the Morenci Mine, Greenlea County, Arizona. The pieces are on an earthy (mostly) black matrix, with countless little blebs of azurite, malachite, and occasionally, bright blue chrysocolla. Small pieces up to 2" by 2" are $8; Deluze-size specimens up to 4" by 3" are $16. You’ll be dazzled by the colors!

BARITE FROM ROSEBUD MINE, NEVADA We also picked up a little while ago a small lot of thick tabular white barite crystals up to ¾" on an edge from the Rosebud Mine, Pershing County, Nevada. We have 2 pieces up to 3" by 3½" for $25 each and one large specimen over 8" by 6" with a number of crystals for $70.

RARE & UNUSUAL– LIBYAN DESERT GLASS And for those who interest in tektites was stimulated by December’s moldavite specimens, we picked up a small lot of Libyan Desert Glass from the Great Sand Sea of southern Libya, Egypt, and northern Sudan. These rare tektites are glassy yellow in color, and the characteristic tektite pitting has all been worn away by millions of years of natural "polishing" by sand. We have fascinating pieces from about 1" by ½" for $14, 1" by ¾" for $16 to 1" by 1" for $22.

JET BEADS AND JET PIECES For bead lovers! Also, new on our web page is a page devoted to our natural Jet beads, available in many styles at very good prices. (And Club members receive an additional 10% discount on beads on our web site, and free shipping in the U.S.) Jet, of course, is an attractive black rock with a high carbon content, believed to be formed from floating logs and other woody plant material that became waterlogged and sank to the sea floor, where they were preserved and compressed like coal. Some references call it a kind of lignite coal, others a petrified wood related to lignite coal. Either way, it’s shiny black, porous, light, and takes a high polish. We ALSO have tumbled polished chunks of jet up to 2" by 2" for $4 each.

NEW BEAD STYLES We are also adding two new styles of beads to our web page, 5-7mm graduated tubes and 7-9mm trillions, in many of the same beautiful and unusual stones we have had for a couple of years, including sugilite, chrysoprase, Imperial Jasper in a couple of colors, Condor Agate, and many others. If you love beads, you’ll find it worth a look! And call us if you don’t have internet access and we’ll mail you a list with a scan of the beads in all their glory.

LARGE APATITE CRYSTALS From the Yates Mine, Otter Lake, Quebec, Canada, we brought home some nice, large single crystals of apatite. They are an opaque dark green in color with a vitreous (glassy) luster– very nice! Small crystals up to 2½" long and 1½" wide are available for $12, and larger crystals up to about 4" long and 2" wide are $24. Very nice!

STILL AVAILABLE! WE RECEIVED ABOUT 1500 PIECES OF FABULOUS OCEAN JASPER FOR OCTOBER 2001! We went through all the pieces, and selected the most wonderful to send to Club members, but there are lots of pretty pieces left! Plus, due to the marvelous variety of colors and patterns, a person could have several pieces and each would have its own unique beauty . . . So for those who would like to add more to their collection, we are offering additional pieces to Club members at a very special price of $10 each, 2 for $19, or 4 for $32! Or if you would like a whole flat of about 40 pieces (randomly selected) to use for lapidary work or to give as gifts, we have a few left for $150. As mentioned in the write-up, these are pieces of the highest grade Ocean Jasper, so this is a fantastic offer.

COPROLITE (FOSSILIZED ANIMAL DROPPINGS) FROM MADAGASCAR This is a new find, as far as we know, from the Tulear region of southwestern Madagascar. We could not find out what kind animal left its droppings to be immortalized as fossils, but they look like the siderite replacements we have seen offered from Washington state and are reddish brown in color. Coprolite is the scientific name for fossilized feces. Size: about 2"-3" by 1"-2", $6 each

LAVA FROM la PLAINE DES SABLES, LA REUNION ISLAND These brown-colored pieces resemble the coprolite, but are much lighter in weight, evidence of gas pockets trapped inside! A lava flow in 1986 enlarged this volcanic island east of Madagascar. We have a few nice pieces about 2½" by 1½" for $5.

DARWIN GLASS FROM TASMANIA These pieces of natural glass, called "impact melts" by scientists, were formed about 770,000 years ago. They come from Mount Darwin Crater, Tasmania, discovered in 1972. These are small (about dime size) green to grey pieces with some translucence, for 75 cents each, or 10 for $5. You’ll enjoy the strange shapes and forms!
